Mark saw that the thugs were afraid, nearly unmanned by his resurrection. He decided to take advantage, to strike swiftly. The thug nearest him was scarred, and built like a line-backer, but cowered like a child as Mark advanced on him, screaming. Mark pushed with all his might, quite surprised with how much that was (Mark has been empowered by his reaper, and his strength is now neutral rather than weak. Standard roll: 4 Target: 1 Result: Failure).
The thug didn't budge, merely stared at Mark's blood soaked hands, and where they had left vivid prints on the thug's shirt. His eyes were as empty as glass. Mark wasted no time in dodging past him and leaped at the wall (Easy Roll: 7 Target: 5 Result: Success). His sure hands were able to find purchase quickly, and his uncanny strength pulled him toward the fire escape.
Once he was on his feet, there was a shot. Mark flinched as a bullet crashed into the wall, close enough to scour his face with the jagged dust. He crouched and looked through the metal, but the shot had been a last desperate attempt, and the men were fleeing as fast as their complete lack of dignity would allow.
Sirens sounded in the near distance, and got closer quite quickly.
(Mark aka Reshi: The park is about fifteen blocks away, to the north, left out of the alley. Bad news is that the park is surrounded by municipal buildings, including the police station from which the cars are presumably coming. What do you do?)
...Meanwhile...
Jonas was enjoying his afterlife much more than he'd thought he would, and quite a bit more than an assassin had any right to expect. Death had barely been an interruption, thanks to some quick decisive action. He was free to live his life as he always had, with the added bonus that this time, it need never end.
Sure, Orux could be a bit of a paranoid old coot, but in Jonas's experience paranoia was a perfectly sensible precaution. Orux didn't even ask for much, just wanted to be protected. Sometimes, of course, a prudent person needed to be proactive when it came to protection, and so it was with Jonas's current mission.
He was on a roof, trying to tail a reaper named Novac. A reaper was a surprisingly difficult thing to spot, let alone follow. Having height and a wide field of vision was a must. Novac was looking into some very nasty reapers, and had some serious heat called down on him. Orux, among others, needed the information Novac had uncovered.
It was the commotion Novac caused that Jonas finally found. He watched a man, obviously a new-born servant, put the fear into some pansies who probably fancied themselves professional killers. The kid was handling himself, so Jonas turned his attention to the surroundings.
A car pulled up a block away, parked. A young couple came out, looking around and chatting. Their clothes were nice, but not lavish. Perfect urban camouflage. Jonas wasn't fooled. He saw the way they moved. They were predators of the highest order. Servants, he was sure of it.
The couple kept chatting, watching the alley in their periphery. Likely they would wait, and follow the kid to Novac. It's what Jonas would have done.
Then the sirens started. The man and woman exchanged a glance and strode purposefully up the street to the alley. They wouldn't risk losing the kid to the legal system.
(Jonas: You are on the roof of the building that Mark has started climbing. You are well hidden. The cops are minutes away at best, the servants a few seconds. What do you do?)
...Meanwhile...
David was sitting under a massive oak, which provided shelter from the light rain, as well as acorns. He held a cell phone to his head, so he didn't look as insane as he felt while he talked to Yanu. He still couldn't get the hang of sharing his head with her, and felt more comfortable when he could converse with her somewhat normally.
"Ok Yanu, we're here. What the hell is so urgent?"
"Novac found something. Something big. Abolish."
David took that in. Finding the Abolish agents in the city was Yanu's purpose for being in it to begin with. Abolish had controlled the city for years now. Vanguard or unaligned reapers disappeared frequently. The faction's influence in the powerful organized crime syndicate was blatant. Yet no one had found the reapers themselves. No one knew their names. Or who their servants were.
"Do you know what he could have found?"
"No," she said, "but they'll kill him for it if they can. He'll meet us here. We have to spread whatever he found as fast as we can, before Abolish can establish control."
"Should you even be here? This sounds dangerous. I can afford a death or two, but only as long as you're around," David said as he eyed a tourist. Something about the man was bugging him.
Yanu looked at the sky, "Novac seemed confidant he could evade pursuit. Besides, this is important. I couldn't stand being anywhere else."
David didn't really get people. Never had. But he'd watched them. The tourist wasn't saying 'tourist' to David, no matter how perfect his clothes and camera for the role. He appeared to be wandering aimlessly, to be taking it all in, but he'd been going in circles instead of moving onto another area of the park.
David began to feel very uneasy about the man.
(Alright David, I think your situation is pretty clear. What do you do?)
* * *
(Okay, party people! Your characters are all relatively fresh servants, and have yet to manifest their powers. It's time to think about what those powers will be. Soon enough you'll be earning XP, and I'll tell you how to exchange them for FABULOUS PRIZES!)
(OOC: It might be wise to say what faction you are... I was not planning on joining either, but I might have wanted to join Abolish. Could be just something I missed, though.) I continue climbing the fire escape, thinking that, covered in blood as he was, the police might not look favorably on him. Near the top, I vault over to the fire escape on the second building. (Should be easy enough, but 3. Gonna be "fun" if I fall.) If I make it, I start crouching and moving toward the park. If not, I lay there for a while, wondering how I messed that jump up. (I do have a jailbroken cell phone. Two, actually. I wear boots, with a knife in the left one, only to be used in the most dire situations. I have multiple flash drives, with some choice programs on them. I had a bag with a laptop in it, but it got damaged in the shooting. His glasses' right lens got cracked after he fell down, and he doesn't have a spare. (He isn't chronically nearsighted, but enough that he wouldn't be able to read words 6-7 feet ahead of him.) He wears a jacket with 3 front pockets, and 2 side ones. And with that, Mark is outfitted. I hope I don't fall.)
ReplyDeleteJust a thought as I wrap up the night. Given what you've said and the state of the story; how would you feel about Novac being a neutral agent, but a desperate one? In this war torn world, he'd like to be left alone, but he learned something he didn't even want to. Now his best bet is to barter that info for whatever protection he can get. Just my take, what do you think?
DeleteSounds about right.
DeleteI didn't mean to sign you up for a faction, and neither did your reaper :)
ReplyDeletePart of the reason this is the prologue is to iron these things out. In fact, if you look at the story, Novac has information on Abolish, and Vanguard wants it. We do not actually know his allegiance yet. I don't want to step on your character's creative toes, so feel free to bring your political opinions up to me and to your reaper. Your character has as much say in this as anyone, and I hate to rail-road.
Such fast reply. M'kay. It might be quite hectic soon, though. Which will be fun. :D
DeleteHa. You caught me at a good time. Not working, learning to use blogspot's tools to make tabs for character sheets and rules and what not. It will be hectic, but that's what I love about DMing. Just between you, me, and the internet; I'm making this up as I go along. I'm not running the characters through a plot I've already devised. It's meant to be a cooperative creation. Even if each character picks a different allegiance (and you will, I know players), I'm going to craft you into a party.
DeleteBut I'll make you pay for the work it takes, like nay good DM. Mwa-ha. Ha-ha.
Since Mark is his only real lead on Novac, Jonas is compelled to help him evade the pursuing servants
ReplyDeleteAfter the servants have entered the alley, I silently rappel down the side of the building out of the servants' view (3)
Draw my knife and a stiletto as I sneak up behind the servants (9)
When they start to engage Mark (in conversation or combat), or if they detect me, I attack trying to stab the female servant in the eye (I hope I hit and damage her brain) (0)
and cut the male servant's Achilles tendon (to cripple his pursuit abilities) (4)
I then attempt to climb the building and flee (2)
Other Information:
Jonas sees a reaper as a large raven that emits a black aura.
Equipment:
Grappling hook
climbing/rappelling gear
Basic poisons & antidotes
Weapons (tentative):
(all have a black matte finish)
(all melee weapons and throwing knives are coated with a neurotoxin to cause paralysis)
2x 8 inch stiletto (one in each boot)
1x 9.5 inch Bowie Knife (horizontally on back belt)
12x throwing knives (assorted locations on chest/back)
Blowgun with a variety of poisoned needles/darts (sheathed diagonally across the back. sadly not too effective against servants, but sturdy enough to double as a short staff in a pinch)
Apparel (may change in the future):
Black leather outfit with hood and mask
black gloves with a black metal plate on the bal of the hand
single piece black metal forearm and shin guards
no where does any piece of metal touch another metal piece, which keeps the outfit from making noise

DeleteOkay, after refreshing the page and reading mark's post I'd like to change my first 2 actions (I just modified the previous reply):
DeleteRemain hidden on the roof until the 2 experienced servants arrive (3)
If they don't follow Mark to the roof, follow him stealthily to Novac (9)
If they do come to the roof, attack as planned in my previous post
If Mark can't climb the fire escape and falls down, go with the original plan
DeleteLet's hope I don't fall, then!
ReplyDeleteI like how Jonas has got a plan for everything. Seems to fit his character too. Good basis for the next round.
ReplyDeleteIn case anyone's curious, plan A was to kill Mark by damaging his brain so Novac would be forced to reconstruct his body. This would prevent the other 2 servants from following Mark to Novac. I would then just follow Novac as Orux desired. Lucky for Mark, Novac had run away by disappearing into the ground, which made pursuit impossible. As a result, Jonas has settled for the plans listed above.
ReplyDelete(OOC: I changed the displayed name to help avoid confusion when I speak as Jonas in the first person. I'm still the same person.)
(This whole post will be out of character)
ReplyDeleteI've been thinking about what ability would suit Jonas the best. Since I still don't really understand how integration works, I'd rather not choose it. I think it would be awesome if integration would allow me to create special (almost magical) equipment I could use in battle, but it is too much of an unknown to use now. Materialization and destruction would be relatively safe/standard abilities, but so far they haven't exhibited the same intriguing possibilities the others have. I don't plan to go down the transfiguration route because the real world me doesn't feel to confident about my chemistry knowledge and I doubt I would be able to maximize the potential of the ability. That leaves alteration and mutation.
Alteration:
If I go alteration I would hopefully get an ability that complements my existing assassin skills. The 2 that come to mind are:
1. EMP: If I can release an EMP I could fry every electronic device around me, essentially negating my poor computer skills. Sadly, this would probably hinder Mark (hacker) more than it would help me. Also, this has already been covered in the story with Karkash' control of electromagnetic fields and I'm reluctant to use the same power as a character from the story.
2. Sound: If Jonas could control sound sneaking around and redirecting the enemies attention would become much easier. However, the true nature of sound is pressure waves in the air caused by the vibration of particles in the atmosphere (see explanation at the end). This means I would be using Roman Fullibuster's ability from the main story...
Mutation:
Considering Jonas' existing familiarity with poisons I assume it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to say that, even before he became a servant, he could have probably developed an immunity to every poison he uses. If I can act under this assumption, I could see Jonas using a mutation ability to give himself poison glands. He might eventually be able to create custom soul-strengthened poisons that could work on servants for more than the few seconds it probably takes a servant to shrug off poison! The only reservation I have about the mutation path is the possibility of failing a mutation and somehow crippling myself.
I would need to know how the experience works before I make a final decision (assuming the DM leaves the choice to us), but as of now, those are the 3 abilities I am considering. I am hoping to hear any feedback you (players or DM) might be able to offer.
The link below should take you to an animation showing showing a series of pressure waves moving to the right. If you look at any individual particle you will notice that it is only oscillating left and right. The vibration of the particles allows the pressure wave to pass through, but the particles themselves don't move. They just vibrate:

You obviously have a lot of thought put into this. Only thing I can think of for Mark is electricity, but again, Karkash. Maybe electricity, but a different form of power? (Integration as opposed to materialization)
DeleteI like both the sound control and mutation, personally. I can see how your command of energy in this fashion is distinct from controlling a wider range of effects on pressure waves or vibration.
DeleteOn the other hand, poison glands for an assassin is just plain fuckin' metal.
As far as experience, purchasing your first level in a power will be cheap and easy, but your ability will still be in its infancy. Only weak poisons, or a limited range on sounds, and rolls to successfully use them will be harder.
Sorry for the empty day, page wise. It'll happen from time to time. I'm going to keep this puppy moving, but life is demanding. So I'll not stress the update schedule, and can only hope you guy are chill.
But anyway, new update tomorrow, which will yield your first XP and chance to use it!
Peace
I wouldn't worry about clashing with the story. I picture this as being a whole parallel world to the story, and Hector and the gang likely don't even exist in it. For instance, I'm going to use primarily real world geography, history, and culture, because it's much more familiar to me than the rich and complex story world of Frost.
DeleteLikewise, we can envision our own way to use integration, and not worry that it's not cannon.
But Reshi, I just had an epiphany. Radio waves. Mark could be a walking wireless modem. Hack things with a glance.
Sounds amazing, but what type would it be? I would have some trouble learning to use it. Unless I'm missing something obvious, it would mainly be support. Which I'm fine with.
DeleteI think that at first level, you'd mostly sense waves, even be able to
Delete'listen in' on them, with concentration. Watch whatever the guy is watching over there in your head, hear police channels, maybe? I know it's not quite how such an ability would work in the story or in the real world, but it works quite well for the game.
Every watch 'Alphas?' I'm picturing something like how Gary could see and sort through a wide range of radio waves. You'd get better from there and actually get the ability to link up with wireless devices through extremely fine control over radio waves.
DeleteI would sorta be a spy. Set a phone or something, tap into it, hear the people talking etc.
DeleteFor a high level ability, radio waves can scramble brains. Just saying.
I would have control over most electronics if this were the case. Hell, if I get strong enough, I would be able to mess with satellites and military bases. I'm gonna look at what type it could be, but it sounds fun, now that I think about it.
Radio waves can indeed scramble the human brain. One of my favorite studies focused on 'hauntings.' Someone noticed that in many hauntings, there was a lot of old wiring, and just generally a tangled knot of EM frequencies in the 'hot spots.' With some experimentation, the doctor was able to reproduce a low-powered but intricate pattern of radio waves that caused disorientation, feelings of being watched, and hallucinations. That would be neat trick to learn.
